Anthropic Just Put a Banker Inside Excel. The "AI Consultant" Job Has a Ceiling Now.
The Signal: On Tuesday May 5, Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 4.7, ten prebuilt finance agents, and full Microsoft 365 integration. Claude now lives inside Excel, Word, and PowerPoint as a single brain that carries context across all three. Moody's just embedded credit data on 600 million companies natively into Claude. Same week, both Anthropic and OpenAI's PE-backed ventures are in talks to acquire AI consulting firms. The "AI consultant for X" niche just got a price tag.
Most coaches I work with spent the last 18 months trying to position as the AI person.
The AI marketing person.
The AI ops person.
The AI for coaches person.
I get it. I've done it. The whole brand sits on top of it.
And on Tuesday morning, the two most powerful AI labs on Earth quietly priced that job.
What Anthropic Actually Shipped
This is not a launch. This is a vertical takeover.
Read that list one more time.
This is not a chatbot upgrade.
This is a junior analyst, a senior associate, a deck producer, and a credit research desk... all wired into the same brain... living inside the file you already have open.
The Other Half of the Story
Same week. Same labs.
Bloomberg and Reuters both confirmed it.
The Anthropic and OpenAI joint ventures we wrote about yesterday... the ones funded by Blackstone, Goldman, and Hellman & Friedman... are now in advanced talks to acquire AI services firms.
OpenAI's vehicle, The Deployment Company, has three deals close to done.
What's an AI services firm?
It's a consulting shop that walks into a business and helps them deploy AI.
Sound familiar?
The Coach Reading It Wrong
Most coaches will see this story and think, "Cool, more enterprise stuff. Doesn't apply to me."
Wrong frame.
Look at the shape of what just happened.
Anthropic is now selling, in one stack:
That is the full vertical.
Model. Interface. Agents. Data. Deployment muscle.
If you sell layer 3, 4, or 5 to anyone... Anthropic just became your competitor.
The "AI Consultant" Job Just Got a Price
Here is the uncomfortable truth.
Six months ago, "I help coaches deploy AI" was a defensible niche.
Three months ago, it still was.
Today, the labs are selling the deployment. They're acquiring the deployment people. They're embedding the agents. They're shipping prebuilt workflows.
The "AI consultant for [niche]" niche didn't disappear.
It got priced.
You cannot out-deploy a $5.5B venture. You cannot out-template ten prebuilt agents. You cannot out-data Moody's. The middle layer of the AI economy is being eaten in real time.
What You Should Actually Be Selling
Stop and breathe with me here.
Because the worst thing you can do reading a story like this is panic and sprint to the next shiny thing.
Look at what Anthropic just commoditized.
Pitchbook generation. Formula auditing. Credit memos. KYC. Month-end close.
What did they not commoditize?
They did not commoditize the conversation that gets a CFO to admit her board has lost trust.
They did not commoditize the room where a founder cries because his identity is wrapped around the company that's about to fail.
They did not commoditize the breath that drops a man's nervous system out of fight-flight long enough for him to actually hear his wife.
They did not commoditize taste.
They did not commoditize relationship.
They did not commoditize embodiment.
What Just Got Priced
- "I help you set up AI tools"
- "I'll write your prompts"
- "I build your AI agents"
- "I templatize your workflows"
- "I audit your AI stack"
What Cannot Be Priced
- The diagnosis only you can make
- The story you can hear under their words
- The container that holds people through transformation
- The taste in what to actually build
- Your nervous system in their nervous system
This is not a pivot away from AI.
It's a reposition above it.
You're not the AI person. You're the human who knows when AI is the wrong answer.
That role does not have a price ceiling.
The Pattern Repeats At Every Layer
If you've been reading The Signal, you've watched this play out over and over.
Stripe and Cloudflare gave AI agents a wallet. The "I'll set up your billing" job got priced.
Microsoft Agent 365 launched the governance layer. The "AI security consultant" job got priced.
Google put agents inside Workspace for free. The "I'll automate your inbox" job got priced.
Today, Anthropic put agents inside Excel and started buying the consultants. The "AI deployment" job got priced.
Different layer. Same shape.
Every job AI labs can ship as a feature... will eventually be a feature.
The work that survives is the work that requires a human to be in the room.
Your Move
Open the offer doc you've been refining.
Read the words.
If your offer is built on "I help you with AI," you are now competing with Anthropic and OpenAI directly.
That is not a winnable fight.
Now rewrite it.
Not "I help you use AI."
"I help you become the kind of human your AI will never replace."
Or whatever your real version of that sentence is.
The model. The agents. The deployment muscle. All of that is going to zero in the next 18 months.
The price of being a real human in a real room with real people is going up.
Pick your side of the curve.
